1608 - Foundation of Quebec City In 1608, French politician and explorer Samuel de Champlain founded what is now known as Quebec City on an abandoned Iroquois site named Stadacona.
After establishing the settlement, de Champlain went on to become the first European to explore the Great Lakes area until he was recalled to Quebec in 1620, where Louis XIII asked him to serve informally as Governor of New France.
